Ida Dorathea Harmsen, age 98, formerly of Sabula, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005 in the Alverno Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005 at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa. Reverend Robert Krueger will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot, Miles Cemetery, Miles, Iowa. Friends may call from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005 prior to the service at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Ida was born September 22, 1906, the daughter of Martin C. and Katharina (Koch) Harmsen. She attended rural Sabula School and Sabula High School. Ida graduated Cedar Rapids Business College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After a brief marriage, Ida embarked on a business career. Ida worked thirty-five years with an Advertising firm in Los Angeles, California. She moved back to Sabula in 1970, to take care of her widowed mother. She worked for two and a half years as an Emergency Room Clerk at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa; then she was appointed City Clerk in Sabula, which position she held for five years and eight months. Ida resigned her position as Sabula City Clerk in 1978 to return to Oceanside, California and live near her sister. She worked part-time as the Office Clerk for the Elks Club in Oceanside, California. Ida and her sister, Mildred moved to Clinton, Iowa in 1992.
Ida was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, a 68 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, past member and officer of Clinton, Iowa and Oceanside, California Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and a member of several social clubs. Ida loved her home and family and was thoughtful of her many friends.
Ida will be deeply missed by her sister, Mildred Hogan and family; nephews, William F. Messner and Donald G. Messmer; niece, Joanne Messner Cluse; cousins, grand nieces and nephews.
Ida was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
