Howard Clayton Metcalf, Jr., age 65, of Hanover, IL, passed away August 30, 2023 at his home, with family by his side.
Howard was born December 2, 1957, in Blue Island, IL, the son of Howard and Norma (Garrett) Metcalf, Sr. He attended school in the West Chicago area. After graduating high school, Howard married Pam Best, and together they had three children.
Howard worked construction jobs, and as a farmer throughout his life, first in the West Chicago area, then the Kirkland, IL area. Later in his life, after Pam’s untimely passing, Howard married Bonnie Beck. Before long, they relocated to Hanover and made a very happy and fun life for themselves. He loved his new community and quickly felt right at home.
As they began their life in Hanover, Howard found fulfilling work as farm manager for Rush Farms. He joined the Savanna Lions Club and quickly set about on old hobbies, such as woodworking, while also adopting new ones, like bee keeping. He found such joy and excitement in preparing for his new endeavor and building the bee hives. Howard was quite the handy man, lovingly referred to as her “master carpenter,” by his beloved Bonnie.
Howard enjoyed NASCAR and Indy Car racing, and loved to watch the barges go by on the Mississippi River. He found the barge transport process fascinating, often stopping to admire them. He loved being on or near the water, and recently had a splendid time on a river cruise with Bonnie. Howard will be dearly missed by many and will always be remembered for his big hardy laugh.
He is survived by his children, Alex (Nate) Guzman, Ben (Ann Marie) Metcalf, and Clay Metcalf; grandchildren, Maddie, Brook, Raelyn and Rylii; wife, Bonnie; step-children, Tricia (Mark) Rush, and Scott (Nikole) Ammon; step-grandchildren, Steven, Kalin, Meghan, Rory, Evelyn, Zoe, and Bailey; sister, Cathy Polz; brother, Brian Metcalf; and uncles and aunts, Bob and Patty Hall and Clifton and Norma Metcalf.
