Howard J. Dauphin, age 77, of Mt. Carroll, IL, passed away Thursday August 15, 2019 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, IL. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Law Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mt. Carroll. Visitation will take place on the day of the service, from 9am to 11am. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Howard was born June 21, 1942, in Savanna, IL, the son of Vic and Vera (Gillespie) Dauphin. He attended Savanna Schools, graduating from Savanna High School with the class of 1961. On May 5, 1963, Howard married his wife of 56 years, Diane Hafer. From 1964 to 1988 Howard hauled milk and grain for Hafer Trucking. In 1988, he and Diane started Dauphin Trucking Company, which Howard operated until his retirement in 2006.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Howard loved the outdoors, and rarely turned down a good card game with friends. He also valued his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter for the Mt. Carroll Fire Dept. for 23 years. The people of Mt. Carroll will miss seeing Howard drive his truck around town with his dog Buffy hanging out the window, white fur flowing in the wind. Most of all, Howard loved his family.
Howard will be dearly missed by his wife, Diane; two sons, Darrin Dauphin of Mt. Carroll and Eric Dauphin of Mt. Carroll; two granddaughters, Lindsay Dauphin of Mt. Carroll and Lauren Dauphin of Mt. Carroll; Brother in law Denny Hafer of Mt. Carroll, and numerous friends and members of his extended family.
Howard is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Victor Dauphin.
