Herbert F. Berlage, 82, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth, with Father Noel Jacob as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 26, at the Law – Jones Funeral Home in Elizabeth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cancer Research in Herbert’s memory.
Herbert was born April 21, 1928, in Elizabeth, Illinois, the son of Joseph H. and Florence E. (Becker) Berlage. He graduated from Elizabeth High School with the Class of 1946. Herbert married Arlene M. Abbott on August 16, 1952, in Cuba City, Wisconsin.
Herbert farmed in the Elizabeth area all of his life. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Herbert also worked at the Savanna Army Depot for 15 years as an Inspector of Ammunition and during that time spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone. Herbert was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth, the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, and the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, especially snowbirding in Florida and Texas in the winter, and being on his farm in the summer. Herbert loved having morning coffee with his friends in downtown Elizabeth.
Herbert is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Arlene Berlage of Elizabeth; three daughters, Beth (Richard) Hottenstein of Miles, Iowa, Teri (Dick) Mensendike of Elizabeth, and Nancy (Chris Dachi) Berlage of Arlington, Virginia; one son – in – law, Bill Streauslin of Dubuque, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Jody Thorne, Michael Richmond, Jason Richmond, James Mensendike, Josie Hupperich, Richard Mensendike, Brandi Streauslin and Brock Streauslin; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, James Berlage of Elizabeth, Maurice (Carole) Berlage of Elizabeth, Laurence (Kay) Berlage of Elizabeth; one sister, Ann (Bert) Tranel of Galena, Illinois; and one sister in – law, Marilyn Berlage of Elizabeth.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Streauslin; one granddaughter, Heather Richmond; two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Berlage; and one sister in – law, Sue Berlage.
Herbert’s family would like to thank all of the Staff at the Elizabeth Nursing Home and Heartland Hospice in Dubuque, especially Dawn Leach.
