Hazel was born at the Dalton residence south of Preston on December 24, 1913 to William & Viola Dalton and grew up in the area along with her four sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Preston Schools and was president of the class of 1931. She played basketball on Preston girls’ basketball team. The gym at that time was on the 2nd floor of Kings department store where the Preston Town Hall is located. Hazel worked as a switchboard operator for the Preston Telephone Company and as a receptionist for Dr. Dwyer. She attended Upper Iowa University’s School of Business. Hazel married Robert “Bob” Driscoll at St. Joseph's rectory in Preston on Feb. 9, 1935. Bob passed away in 1999.

In 1941, Bob and Hazel opened Driscoll Hardware & Appliance in Preston and worked together for over 60 years. Hazel was a founding member of her bridge club where she enjoyed many good times with her friends for over 70 years. Hazel always had itchy feet and loved to travel. She visited her sons in Texas, Hawaii, California and Florida. Hazel was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan and attended the Rose Bowl in 1982, and at age 95 went to the Outback Bowl in Tampa in 2009.

Hazel and Bob, along with his brother Martin and wife Budgie, traveled to Spain and North Africa on a trip through the hardware association. She always expressed interest in what her sons and their families were doing and encouraged them to always get out and enjoy life.

Hazel will be dearly missed by her three sons; Norman Driscoll of Arlington, Texas, Steven (Judy) Driscoll of Naples, Florida and Brian (Kathy Youmans) Driscoll of Camanche, Iowa; as well as many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will always be remembered for the twinkle in her blue eyes and how she always enjoyed the fun times in life.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; two brothers, Lester and Burton, four sisters Nellie, Gladys, Lepha and Elsie; her grandson, Donald and one daughter-in-law, Jackie.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Bernice and Linda for their gentle care with her at home and to Dr. James Cahill for his many visits and care giving. Hazel was the matriarch of a very lucky family - we'll miss her great love and spirit.
