Hazel M. Bruse, 97, of Sabula, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue, Iowa. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Krabbenhoft Library in Hazel’s honor.
Hazel was born June 9, 1914, on a farm outside of Sabula, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Mabel (Seitzberg) Dickinson. She graduated from Sabula High School and continued her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning her teaching certification, she also attended Rockford College. Hazel married Henry J. Bruse on June 17, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Hazel taught school in Sabula and Miles, Iowa, Rockford, Illinois, and in Savanna, Illinois. She was a wonderful teacher and was very much loved by her students. Hazel and Henry enjoyed riding their horses for many years. They spent many days riding and caring for their horses. Hazel was so happy that she could spend many years in her home on the river enjoying watching the boats and trains. Henry and Hazel liked to travel and spent many weekends going out to dinner and playing cards with friends. Hazel was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, a former District Deputy of the Pythian Sisters, the Krabbenhoft Library Board, the Jackson County Retired Teachers and the Miles Literary Club.
Hazel is survived by her niece’s, Virginia (Keith) Crawford of Denison, Iowa, and Jane (Donald) Kelley of Clive, Iowa.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry; and two sisters, Harriet Pullan and Jane Slade.
