Harriet L. Smith, age 107, of Savanna, Illinois. Carroll County’s oldest resident passed away on Friday, June 9, 2006 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, Illinois. Pastor Tom Moe of the First United Methodist Church of Savanna will officiate. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday until service time at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. Harriet was born on April 18, 1899, the daughter of William and Elva Olive (Swift) Ritchie in Washington Township, Illinois. Harriet attended the country school at Marcus, just north of Savanna, Illinois. She married Fred B. Smith on January 1, 1940 in Galena, Illinois. Fred passed away September 2, 1970 in Rockford, Illinois. Harriet was a homemaker and enjoyed babysitting for many years of her life. She also enjoyed crocheting and tatting. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Savanna, Illinois, and former member of the Milwaukee Woman’s Club.
Harriet will be deeply missed by a stepdaughter, Phyllis Schroeder of Estes Park, Colorado; several step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews along with great nieces and nephews. Local survivors include nieces, Marcile Jones of Fulton, Illinois, Lois Kroll of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Eunice Bowers and Ruth Ermel, both of Savanna, Illinois; and Betty Myer of Plymouth, Minnesota; two nephews, Boyd Ritchie of Savanna, Illinois and Gene Lurdy of Burr Ridge, Illinois.
Harriet is preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred; step-son Wayne Smith; two sisters, Berneice Lundy and Dora Ensch; three brothers, Oran, Earl and Clifford Ritchie; and nine nieces and nephews.
