Harold “Pete” Kauffman, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Big Meadows Nursing Facility, Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Burial will take place in Oakville Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pete was born September 28, 1923, to Joseph and Anna (Edwards) Kauffman in Thomson, Illinois. He attended Savanna High School, and graduated with the Class of 1942. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. On October 27, 1944, Pete married Carmen Bender in Thomson. They celebrated 70 years of marriage until Carmen’s death on January 15, 2015.
Pete worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as an engineer for over 40 years. He also farmed on Creamery Road near Mt. Carroll from the 60’s through the 80’s. Pete was a member of the American Legion as well as a member of the Tebala Shrine, Freeport and a 50-year member of the Cyrus Masonic Lodge #66, Mt. Carroll. He was also a past Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. He coached little league baseball for several years.
Pete will be dearly missed by his two sons, Kim (Lois) Kauffman of Savanna, and Mark (Liz) Kauffman of Wheaton, Illinois; daughter, Nina (Dick) Olson of Sun City West, Arizona; four grandchildren, Brad (Amy) Kauffman, Michelle Kauffman, Michael (Denise) Fritz, and Kelly (Jerry) Lakawa and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carmen; his parents, Joseph and Anna; six sisters, Harriet Hansen, Evelyn Beck, Pearl Williams, Trilby Robertson, Katherine Cravatta and Gladys Atkins; and one brother, George Kauffman.
