SAVANNA, IL – Gladys James, 102, died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 1, at Law Jones Funeral Home, preceded by visitation at 1 p.m.
A private graveside service will be in Savanna Township Cemetery.
Gladys Leota Morgan was born March 19, 1908, in Bancroft, WI, to Mary “Mollie” (Troupe) and Fred Morgan. She married Maurice “Pete” James June 24, 1933, in Savanna.
She played piano and organ all her life, from childhood until recent years. After high school, she moved to Savanna for her first job, playing music for silent movies. She played the organ for Community United Church of Christ more than 65 years, beginning in 1930, and also played the organ for Law-Jones Funeral Home for many years. She also taught piano to hundreds of children over nearly seven decades.
In addition to music, she loved dogs, especially her Boston Terriers, Jackie and Ricky. As friends will remember, she also notably enjoyed the color red.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1979; a son, Roger, in 1938; and sisters Blanche Hutchinson in 1999, and Grace Bogue in 2009.
She is survived by nieces Dianne Morgano, Milwaukee, WI; Carol Hayes, Bettendorf, IA; Joyce Ramsey, San Bernardino, CA; Helen Llerandi, San Diego, CA; Donna Barlass, Stillwater, MN, and Dorothy Resheske, Nekoosa, WI.
