Gerald A. Heiar, age 84, of Charlotte, Iowa, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the The Alverno, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday June 20, 2008 at the Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte with Father Scott Lemaster as Celebrant. Burial will in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday June 19, 2008 at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given for The Alverno, in Gerald’s memory.
Gerald was born January 29, 1924 in St. Donatus, Iowa, the son of Norbert and Cathrine (Malone) Heiar. He moved to Charlotte in 1938 where he graduated from Charlotte High School with the class of 1944. Gerald married June Scalla in Charlotte Assumption Church on October 27, 1945. She died on July 9, 1995. They farmed one-quarter mile west of Charlotte for one year before buying a farm two miles northeast of Charlotte that is still in the family. He loved working the land, and raising livestock especially pigs. After retiring from farming in 1985, Gerald and June enjoyed traveling and most of all camping with relatives and friends. They made great new friends spending the winters in Texas in The Valley for over twenty years. Gerald had been an active member and trustee of the Assumption Catholic Church.
Gerald will be dearly missed by two sons, Larry (Gloria) Heiar of Bryant, Iowa and Bill (Marilyn) Heiar of Charlotte, Iowa; a son in-law, Jim Roling of Preston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd (Mary) Heiar of Clinton, Iowa and Wayne (Natalie) Heiar of Charlotte, Iowa; and a sister, Corine (Ed) Tillis of Petersburg.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, wife June, one daughter Marilou, three grandchildren, and a sister Viola.
Pallbearers for Gerald’s service include: Jason Heiar, Tim Heiar, Lisa Roth, Tracy Ellis, Jill Roling, and Rebecca Roling. Honorary Pallbearers include Robert Roling and Sgt. Justin Heiar.
