George Siedenburg

George H. Siedenburg, age 88, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, with Pastor Niel Shoffner officiating. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Savanna VFW. Visitation will take place from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Community United Church of Christ in George’s memory.
George was born May 3, 1927, the son of William and Ida (Douglas) Siedenburg. He attended Excelsior Country School, and later graduated from Savanna Township High School in 1945.
After high school he enlisted in the Army and spent 18 months in Japan. Upon discharge he joined the Illinois National Guard and was employed at the Savanna Armory, earning the rank of Warrant Officer.
In June of 1951, George married Marion Faust in Zwingle, Iowa. That fall, his National Guard unit was mobilized, and he left in February 1952 for Camp Cooke in Lompoc, California. In October 1952, George received orders for Korea. He returned to the states in late 1953 and was discharged from active duty.
George took a job in Bloomington, Illinois as a claims adjustor for Country Companies. In the spring of 1959 he returned to Savanna with his young family, and was employed at the Savanna Savings, Building and Loan, where he became the managing officer in April 1965 until his retirement in 1992.
As an active member of The Community United Church of Christ, he taught Sunday School, served on various church boards, and assisted with the Youth Fellowship program for a number of years.
George is survived by his wife, Marion; son, William of Thomson, Illinois; daughter, Sharon (Laurence) Wynne of Naperville, Illinois; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; 16 nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.
