George J. Olmsted, age 91, of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2019 at his home. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will take place in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Orland Park, Illinois at a later date.
George was born September 21, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois to George and Emily (Kuch) Olmsted. Growing up in Chicago, he attended Hale Elementary School and Lindblom High School. At the age of 17, with World War II still raging, George obtained his mother’s permission and enlisted in the United States Navy. Serving aboard a warship, George saw action in the Pacific Theater of the conflict.
Soon after returning home from the war, George met Joan “Jo Ann” Corrado. The two were married on September 4, 1948 in Chicago. After working a few factory jobs, George found his true calling as a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Dept. George served his home city in this fashion for 32 years, retiring in 1985. Shortly thereafter, he and Joan moved to Elizabeth to enjoy their retirement.
George and Joan were nearly inseparable in retirement. They loved to garden together, and competed in local bowling leagues. George also had an adventurous side, as he loved to travel. He and Joan set sail on cruises, relaxed on bus trips, and even enjoyed touring Europe.
George will be dearly missed by his son, Gerry (Sandy) Olmsted of Orland Park, Illinois; daughter, Deborah (Nick) Hernandez of Elizabeth, Illinois; four grandchildren, Kate (Chris) Morris of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Greg Olmsted and Holly Harris of Phoenix, Arizona, Gina Hernandez of Galena, Illinois, and Tony Hernandez of Westmont, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren, William, Brady, and Corey Morris.
