George Edward Jargo served his country during WWII, and farmed the land he loved all of his life near Miles, Iowa. At the age of 94, George passed away at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. Burial will be in the Miles City Cemetery with full military rites accorded by the Miles American Legion. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston.
George was born August 4, 1921 near Miles on the family farm, the son of Harry and Florence (Cook) Jargo. He is a 1938 graduate of the Miles High School. George served as a Corporal in the US Army Infantry during WWII in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Theatres, and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home after the war to farm near Miles with family. George was a silent hero when it came to his military service.
George loved farming and buying and raising cattle. He farmed all of his life with his brother Melvin. Their grandfather had purchased the land in 1898, when their father, Harry, was just three years old. Both George and Melvin retired from farming in 1987 and moved into town. George was a member of the Miles American Legion Spencer Cook Post #677, and the First Presbyterian Church of Miles.
George will be dearly missed by his two brothers, Melvin Jargo of Miles and Donald Jargo of Clinton, Iowa; ten nieces and nephews, Steve, Scott, Dan, Lori and Tom Jargo, Dave Jargo, Kim Jargo Seesser, Donna Current, Barbara Bellmore and Janey Flynn; nine great-nieces and nephews; and fourteen great-great-nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his older brother, Herbert, and both parents.
