George W. Glay

George W. Glay, age 96, of Galena, Illinois, died Sunday, October 7, 2012, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois. Cremation rites will be accorded and private family services will be held at a later date Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Kidney Association in George’s memory. George was born October 27, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of George and Minnie (Schmidt) Glay. He graduated from Maine East High School in Des Plaines, Illinois. George proudly served in the United States Navy and was a Chief Petty Officer during World War II in the European and Pacific Theaters. He married Mary Eileen Kelly in Chicago, Illinois.
George moved to Galena in 1975 and did accounting work until he retired at the age of 82. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Galena and was a longtime member and Past President of the Galena Lion’s Club. George was an avid gardener, flower and vegetable, and was a member of the Tri State Garden Club. He loved spending time with his children and especially his grandchildren.

George is survived by two daughters, Carole (Warren, deceased) Groth of Sister Bay, Wisconsin, and Virginia (Edward) Glay – Muchie of Galena, Illinois; one son, Jim Glay of Arlington Heights, Illinois; and four grandchildren, Carrie (Scott) Graybill of Sister Bay, Wisconsin, Matthew (Ashley) Muchie of Iowa City, Iowa, Paul (Aimee) Muchie of Madison, Wisconsin, and Kevin Muchie of Galena.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary Eileen Glay; one granddaughter, Mariel Catherine Muchie; and one sister, Shirley Beck.

George’s family would like to thank the staff at Big Meadows Nursing Home and Freeport Hospice for their care and kindness, and a special thank you to Galena Adult Day Care.
