Genevieve Fischer

Genevieve Fischer, age 98 of Elizabeth, Illinois, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth, Illinois. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the mass at the church. Memorials may be given to the Elizabeth Ambulance Association in Genevieve’s memory.
Genevieve was born on September 28, 1917, the daughter of Burl and Hilda (Logan) Reed in rural Elizabeth. She was raised in Elizabeth and graduated from Elizabeth High School with the Class of 1935. Genevieve married Edmund Fischer on December 21, 1935. Edmund died on April 6, 1988.
Genevieve was passionate about her family, friends and the Elizabeth community. She was a member of the Church of St. Mary, Elizabeth, where she served with the Altar and Rosary Society. Genevieve was also a member of the Lioness Woman’s Club and Jo Daviess County Home Extension. She volunteered with the nursing home auxiliary and liked calling Bingo numbers. She enjoyed reading with her book club, playing cards with family and friends and taking shopping trips to Dubuque. She also enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening and taking long Sunday rides. Most of all, Genevieve cherished family gatherings, especially spending time with her grandkids.
Genevieve will be dearly missed by three daughters, Janice (Bill) O’Brien of Galena, Illinois, Joan (Jim) Jacobs of Lake Carroll, Illinois and Diane (Steve) Rees of Elgin, Illinois; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edmund; one brother, Curtis Logan; two sisters, Helen Bechtel and Dorothy Paisley; two granddaughters, Cathy O’Brien and Julie O’Brien; and a son-in-law, Bill O’Brien.
