Gene E. Marken, age 86, of Thomson, Illinois passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna, Illinois. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Thomson Fire Department, Community United Church of Christ or the Thomson Veterans Memorial Fund in Gene’s memory.
Gene was born October 30, 1929, the son of James Hector and Helen (Lister) Marken in Savanna, Illinois. He attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1949, where he participated in football, basketball and track. Gene married Jean Howard on September 29, 1951 in Springfield, Tennessee. They celebrated 65 years together.
Gene honorably served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean War. He worked at the Savanna Army Depot as an Ammunition Inspector and retired in 1976. After two days of being retired, Gene went to work for Lynnwood Links in Thomson as the grounds supervisor and retired for the second time in 1983.
Gene was an active member of the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna. He served as Past Commander of Thomson American Legion Post #1025, the Savanna V.F.W. Post #2223, the Korean War Veterans Association, Savanna Moose Lodge, and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (N.A.R.F.E.) He served on the Board of Directors for many years at the First Savanna Savings Bank and the Thomson School Board. Gene was an Eagle Scout and later a Scout Master for twenty years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and especially his Boston Terriers. Gene loved camping and traveling with his wife, Jean. They were well traveled, visiting all 50 states and five continents.
Gene is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jean; one son, Steve Marken of Thomson; a daughter, Julianne Marken of Thomson; two grandsons, James and John Schwarte; twin brother, Jack (Diana) Marken of Thomson; brother, James (Phyllis) Marken of Eldridge, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda; a sister, Mildred Witt; and one brother, Don Marken.
