Gary was born March 1, 1943 in Savanna, one of four brothers who mostly grew up in that old railroad town. He remembered much of his growing up years at his Grandmother and Grandfather's home. Gary is a 1962 graduate of the Savanna High School. Fresh out of school, a friend said, "Let;s join the Airforce!" Which is what he did. He served his country in Japan and Berlin, Germany from 1962 to 1966. Returning to Savanna, he went to work at the Milwaukee Railroad. He would say, "Those were the happiest times of my life!" That's when he met Beverly and began a family. He cherished his two daughters and always stayed close. Famous quote, "It is, and isn't, a modern family."
After almost ten years with the Railroad, Gary went to work with his brother, Jim, at the Red & White Grocery Store in Milledgeville Grocery Store business. As the business expanded, Gary worked in several communities including Shannon. After the grocery business, Gary worked at Walmart in Sterling for eight years before his retirement. He settled down in an old converted school house in the country near Lanark, Illinois.
Gary is survived by two daughters, Darcy Ann (Jeff) Dupont of Rock Island, Illinois and Natalie Jean (Chris Zimmer) Shaw of Moline, Illinois; and two brothers, Tom (Barb) Shaw of Mt. Carroll, Illinois and Billy Shaw of Savanna, Illinois. Gary is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Shaw.
