Frederick “Fred” Mokry, age 73, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2017. Fred was born April 8, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edward and Frances (Kubiak) Mokry. He attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana and graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in General Engineering. He also played football for Purdue as #43. Fred married Cynthia Flores in June of 1966.
During college Fred and Cindy often hosted many of their nieces and nephews at their married student housing apartment. They have fond memories of his fun spirit, his love of all sports, and his directives to "Hustle!". Whenever Uncle Fred dropped by, you could count on an outdoor game of "Unc" against the nieces and nephews.
Fred launched his career at Chicago Vocational School, as a teacher and coach. He inspired his students to strive for their best. Fred later pursued property management and maintenance operations at rental properties throughout the Chicago area for many years. Fred always enjoyed visiting the Savanna area. He eventually purchased the Black Hawk Motel in rural Savanna. As the motel owner/manager he was warmly welcomed by the community and enjoyed friendships with the many return guests to the motel. He always reserved Room Four for his beloved son, Brian's visits. Brian was the pride and joy of his life.
Fred will be missed by his son, Brian (Karey Nicolini) Mokry of Winfield, Illinois; a brother, Edward (Barbra) Mokry and a sister, Shirley Ostrowski, and his many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David (Alice) Mokry and a sister, Marlene (Walter) Kubiak; and his most special friend Nelly Flores.
