Fred E. Smith

Fred E. Smith, age 81 of Savanna, Illinois, died on March 5, 2011 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Reverend Floyd West officiating. Burial will take place in the Spring Lake Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Fred’s memory.
Fred was born on January 10, 1930, the son of Fred and Orie (Weber) Smith in Tiskilwa, Illinois. He married Ruth Klein on September 3, 1956 and later married Jacqueline Kay Long on February 23, 1985 in Savanna.
Fred was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for thirteen years and the Savanna Army Depot, Savanna for an additional two years. He also worked as a Custodian for the Lincoln School, Savanna. Fred was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Clinton. He served as Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Leader for Pack# 46 for several years. Fred enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening and fishing. Most of all, Fred cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Fred will be dearly missed by his wife, Jackie of Savanna; his five children, Fred Smith, Jr. of Savanna, Gary (Belinda) Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada, Gregory (Roberta) Smith of Savanna, Kevin Smith of Savanna and Sharon (William) Chadwick of Savanna; fourteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and nine brothers and sisters, Mary Johnson of Sterling, Illinois, Alma (Donald) Wiltfang of Polo, Illinois, Wilma (Robert) Wolfley of Polo, Betty (Jim) Allen of Marseilles, Illinois, Maurie “Jim” (Darlene) Smith of Savanna, Delores (Marv) Hougas of LaSalle, Illinois, Alexandier “Van” (Connie) Smith of Freeport, Illinois, Arnold (Wendy) Smith of Kewanee, Illinois and Richard (Nancy) Smith of DesMoines, Iowa.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Freddie, Lawrence and Robert Smith; and one sister, Janice Davis.
