Fred Mueller was kind, caring and loving. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed joking with everyone. At the age of 87, Fred passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Allure Nursing Home of Mt. Carroll. A private family service will be held at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Freeport. Memorials are requested for FHN Hospice in his honor, 773 W. Lincoln Blvd, Freeport, IL 61032.
Fred was born March 25, 1936 near Gunder, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Tillie (Knutson) Mueller. He was one of nine children. In 1955 – 1956, Fred served in the US Army stationed in Korea. He helped raise two children, Miles and Annette. On September 4, 1984, Fred married the love of his life, Ione (Randecker) Gelwicks at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They have celebrated 39 years of marriage and were longtime residents of Ridott, Illinois.
Fred worked for Northwestern, Contel, GTE and Verizon telephone companies, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, country music, camping and piloting a private plane. He especially enjoyed travelling to Indiana and Iowa visiting family and travelling around the United States seeing the sights with Ione.
Fred is survived by his wife, Ione Mueller of Mt. Carroll; his son, Miles Mueller of Marion, Indiana; his daughter, Annette (Curt) Thieleke of Swayzee, Indiana; his stepson, Jerry Gelwicks of Mt. Carroll; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a brother, Gene (Ceil Gray) Mueller of Lansing, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Arlene (Keith) Jones, Dorothy (Clarence) Hoffman, Lillian (Louie) Mohlman, Betty (Wayne) Miller, Donna (Ronnie) Dutter; brothers, Marlin (Bonnie) Mueller and Bill Mueller; a sister-in-law, Judy Mueller; and stepson, Randy Gelwicks.
