Fred M. Dauphin, age 92, of Savanna, IL, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014, at the Alverno Rehab Facility in Clinton, Iowa, in the presence of his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2014, at the Savanna Bible Church. Burial will take place in the Savanna Township Cemetery with full military rites by the Savanna VFW Post #2223. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, IL.
Fred was born on March 6, 1922, in Savanna, Illinois, to Victor and Mattie (Palmer) Dauphin. Fred graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1940. He worked on the family farm while growing up. After graduation, Fred joined the Marine Corps and fought in the Pacific during WWII with Fighter Squadron VMF-225. After Fred returned from the war he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and the Savanna Army Depot. Fred then became partners with Syl Alden and ran the Alden and Dauphin Standard Service in Savanna. Syl passed away in 1964 and Fred continued to expand the business at 601 Main Street for 35 years. Over the years the business was Standard, Amoco, and now, BP.
Fred married Geraldine Krafft in 1942 and shared 70 years together. Geraldine passed away in 2013.
Fred donated much of his spare time to Savanna and Carroll County organizations. He was a long time board member of the National Bank in Savanna, Savanna Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Council under Governor Ogalvie, lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion, Carroll Extension Council, lifetime member of the Savanna Rotary Club, Mississippi Flyway Gun Club, and the NRA. He also served as the Savanna Fire and Police Commissioner and served on the Carroll County Housing Authority for 35 years.
Fred also found time to coach the Savanna Women’s fast pitch softball team and boy’s little league teams. He also sponsored many sports teams in Savanna as a business owner. Fred enjoyed the river, fishing, hunting, cribbage, playing cards, and watching his favorite sports teams: the Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Bulls, and the fighting Illini. Fred loved to travel and most of all, loved being with his family.
Fred will be dearly missed by his two sons; Larry (Lynn) Dauphin of Geneseo, IL and Jeff (Ranee) Dauphin of Savanna, IL; seven grandchildren, Larry (Evelyn) Dauphin, Kent (Susie) Dauphin, Chad (Angela) Dauphin, Desiree (Sergio) Flores, Eric (Angela) Dauphin, David (Nicole Mueller) Dauphin, Sandi (Jason) Johnston; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Brinkmeier of Mt. Carroll, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife; both parents; four brothers, Victor, Palmer, Paul, and Ben; and two sisters, Lesetta and Dorothy.
