Frank Newman

Frank Newman, age 95, of Savanna, Illinois passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Highland Health Care Center, Highland, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Church on the Hill, formerly Center Hill United Brethren Church, Mt. Carroll. Pastor Floyd West will officiate. Burial will be in the Center Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 – 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2011 prior to the service at the Church.
Frank was born February 7, 1916 in Rochester, New York, the son of B.F. and Lottie (Smith) Newman. On December 19, 1935 at the Mt. Carroll United Brethren Parsonage Frank married Lillian L. Holy. She passed away October 21, 1996.
Frank came to Carroll County in 1934 to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the US Navy during WWII from July 4, 1943 to December 20, 1945. He worked various jobs until 1948, then began work at the Savanna Army Depot until his retirement in 1974. In his spare time, Frank enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a longtime member of the Center Hill United Brethren Church, where he met his wife Lillian in 1934.
Frank will be dearly missed by two nephews, Ben Newman of Florida and Dick Newman of Alhambra, Illinois; two nieces, Cindy Giger of Highland, Illinois and Deborah Waller of Indiana; and several other nieces and nephews. Frank is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, four sisters and two brothers.
