Frank William Kerns, age 59, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away on June 15, 2025, at his sister’s home in Savanna after an extended illness, surrounded by the love of his family and the care of Rock River Hospice.
Frank was born on November 7, 1965, in Melrose Park, Illinois, the son of Francis James and Carole Kay (Cooper) Kerns. He spent over 30 years working as a roofer in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he made many friends and memories under the sun. Later in life, he returned to Illinois and worked for Robanco Piping in Joliet for three years.
Frank had a big personality and a big heart. He loved fishing, horseback riding, hitting the casino, and barbecuing with family and friends. He had a natural connection with animals—so much so that people often called him “Dr. Dolittle.” Whether it barked, purred, or whinnied, it had a friend in Frank.
He is survived by his daughter, Kayla Kerns of North Carolina; his brother, Bruce Cartwright of Joliet; his sister, Diane Speers (and Wes Lovett) of Savanna; and his mother, Carole Kerns of Joliet. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis James Kerns.
Per his wishes, cremation will be accorded, and no services will be held.
Frank will be remembered for his free spirit, his love for animals and adventure, and the way he made life feel a little more fun for those around him.
