Frank William “Carl” Zahn, Sr., age 86, of Lanark, Illinois died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mount Carroll. Burial will take place in the Trinity Cemetery, rural Mount Carroll with Military Rites accorded by the Lanark V.F.W. Post # 4857. A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 17894 Timber Lake Road, Mount Carroll, Illinois 61053. Frank was born on August 27, 1926, the son of William and Willamina (Zeishe) Zahn in Fair Haven, Illinois. He married Grace Gums on June 1, 1964 in the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mount Carroll.
Frank proudly served his country in the United States Army. He spent many years as a farm and factory worker. He also mowed cemeteries and was a local gravedigger for over 50 years. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years, woodworking and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Frank will be dearly missed by his wife, Grace; three sons, David (Diane) Gums of Atwater, Minnesota, Samuel (Tao) Gums of Chadwick, Illinois and Frank (Heather) Zahn, Jr. of Lanark; four daughters, Norma McColley of Lanark, Brenda (Ron) Messinger of Lanark, Christine Zahn of Lanark and Ida (Steve) Merkel of Chadwick; nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Helen Fredrick.
