Forrest E. Mowry was a thoughtful person and a gifted poet—often giving poems as gifts. Forrest died at the age of 92, Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Polo, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Frank- Law- Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, February 21, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll.
Forrest was born on November 12, 1921, the son of Thurman and Kathleen (Buckwalter) Mowry in Savanna, Illinois. He attended a one room school house on the Loren Blacktop in rural Mt. Carroll. On March 19, 1948, Forrest married Evelyn VanDyke in Whiteside County. Evelyn passed away January 8, 1994.
In the 1950s, Forrest worked for the Savanna Army Depot. After working there, he farmed with his brother- in law, Jim (Joyce) Hook in rural Mt. Carroll. He later became a grain handler for Johnson’s Feed in Mount Carroll from 1964 until 1981. Forrest was known for his poetry and shared it with everyone—often giving poems as a gift or thank you. He also enjoyed woodworking, watching T.V., working in the yard and feeding the birds. Most of all, Forrest treasured spending time with his family and friends.
Forrest will be dearly missed by his three sons, Steven (Lora) Mowry of Aurora, Colorado, Lonnie (Jeri) Mowry of Aurora, Colorado, and Dennis (Leola) Mowry of Rockton, Illinois; his Daughter, Jennie (Jerry) Janssen of Chadwick, Illinois; nine grandchildren, John Tessendorf of Marengo, Illinois, Tabitha (Alex) Martinez of Aurora, Colorado, Steven (Melissa) Mowry II of Littleton, Colorado, Jenny (Jim) Adams of Byers, Colorado, Kristi Mowry of Byers, Nathan (Elizabeth) Mowry of Batavia, Illinois, Ryan (Mary Sutton) Mowry of Machesney Park. Illinois, Lindsay (Chris Sack) Janssen of Oswego, Illinois and Lacey (Christopher Duran) Janssen of Dubuque, Iowa; nine great- grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Weber of Savanna, Illinois and one brother in-law, John Hovorka of Mt. Carroll.
Forrest is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; a daughter, Susan Mowry; one sister, Joyce Hovorka and two brothers-in-law, Jim Hook and Lloyd Weber.
