Florence E. Smith

Florence E. Smith, age 103 of Mt. Carroll, passed away peacefully Monday, November 26, 2018 at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. She lived four years since 2014 at the Good Samaritan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Carroll. A private burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll.

Florence was born December 10, 1914 in Salem Township, rural Mt. Carroll. She is a 1933 graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School. She then attended Shimer College in Mt. Carroll and received her Teacher’s Certificate. On August 20, 1938, Florence married Glenn Smith. They raised a son and celebrated sixty-five years of marriage before Glenn’s passing in 2003.
Florence taught school for many years, starting out in the Woodland country school near Mt. Carroll where she would teach every subject and every age. She then taught many years for the Savanna School District at the Avenue Elementary School, teaching third grade. Mrs. Smith was one of the favorite teachers at the Avenue School.

After retirement, Florence and Glenn loved to travel, visiting their favorite places, including Alaska and Hawaii. They also wintered many years near Fort Meyers, Florida where they had many friends and enjoyed the warmer weather. Wherever they went, they danced. Florence loved dancing with Glenn, they even taught ballroom dancing while in Florida. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow. Florence has been a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church.

Florence will be dearly missed by her son, David and Jan Smith of Mt. Carroll; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Shane Brandel of Forsyth, Illinois and Jason and Janice Suerth-Smith of LaGrange, Illinois; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Paige. Florence is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glenn; a sister, Hazel Strauch; and an infant brother, Arthur.
