Florence Arlene Melendy, age 88, of Savanna, Illinois, died, Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. Cremation will take place and a Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Reverend Thomas Moe of the First United Methodist Church, Savanna will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois.
Florence was born on June 23, 1918 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, the daughter of Orlo W. and Marian R. (Emery) Smith. She attended Mt. Carroll Schools, graduating with the Class of 1936. On June 18, 1936, Florence married Paul “Red” Melendy in Mt. Carroll, Illinois.
Florence enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna. From the years of 1939 –1942, Red and Florence owned and operated the Original Hire’s Root Beer stand on Chicago Avenue in Savanna, before it became the Chicken Coop. Through the years she enjoyed playing cards, was a Girl Scout Leader, and “girl friday” for Melendy’s Plumbing and Heating.
Florence will be dearly missed by her husband, “Red” Melendy of Savanna; a daughter, Nena (David) Engaldo of Downers Grove, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Jeff (Melissa) Engaldo and Jennifer (Norm) Sidler; and five great grandchildren.
Florence is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Francis Smith and one sister, Jeanette Smith.
