Fern Irwin, age 97, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at home at the Pinnacle Place in Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2018 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2018 at the funeral home in Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be given in Fern’s memory to the Mt. Carroll Methodist Church and the Mt. Carroll Public Library.
Fern was born on February 13, 1921, the daughter of Glen and Mable (Speer) Carson in Woodland Township, rural Mt. Carroll. She attended Mt. Carroll High School and graduated with the Class of 1939. She then attended American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, IA. On August 23, 1941, Fern married Charles Lyle Irwin at the Baptist Church Parsonage by Reverend Seitner. They raised four children and celebrated 49 years of marriage until Lyle’s death in 1990.
Fern worked as a bookkeeper for the Production Credit Union, the Savanna Army Depot, Adams Department Store in Mt. Carroll, the Carroll County Treasurer’s Office, part-time at Sieber’s Jewelry. Fern was very active in the community. She volunteered her time for Meals on Wheels, the Savanna Food Pantry, the Savanna Thrift Store, along with many other community events. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and bingo. She became a member of the Mt. Carroll Methodist Church in 1990 and was active in the Church Circle and P.E.O. Chapter GA. She was also active in The Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Fern will be dearly missed by her four children, Stanley (Linda) Irwin of Dubuque, Iowa, Wendy (John) Major of Mt. Carroll, Debbie (Henry) Van Zuiden of Sun City West, Arizona, and Linda Irwin of Waukesha, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, Todd, Benjamin, Johanna, Jessica, Justin, Drew, Daniel and Timothy; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Lyle); her parents, Glen and Mable; brother, Herbert; and sister, Shirley.
