Evelyn Mae Thayer, age 82, of Sabula, Iowa, died on Monday, January 30, 2012, surrounded by her loving family at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A visitation will be held from 11:00-1:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Evelyn’s memory.
Evelyn was born on February 3, 1929 in Chatham, Louisiana. Evelyn was raised by her grandparents and attended Chatham High School and graduated with the Class of 1948. Evelyn met her future husband, Jack Thayer in Shreeveport, Louisiana. Evelyn and Jack moved to Sabula, Iowa in the early 1950’s and they were married on June 17, 1952 in Dubuque, Iowa. Jack died on April 9, 2007.
Evelyn was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She also worked for Ackerman Grocery Store and Products Unlimited in Sabula. Evelyn enjoyed playing cards and looked forward to weekly poker games with family and friends. Most of all, Evelyn loved spending time with her family.
Evelyn will be dearly missed by two sons, Don (Deb) Thayer of Sabula and Stephen Thayer of Sabula; five grandchildren, Angie (Adam) Graves, Audrey Thayer, Bobbi Jo Petersen, Stephen (April Friesner) Thayer and Joshua Thayer; five great grandchildren, Kadin, Kyson and Carter Graves and Jaide and Jerzie Petersen; and a special neighbor, Mary Faye. Evelyn was preceded in death by parents and her husband, Jack.
