Evelyn was born the fifth of six children to Ferdinand and Alma Grimm, in Wacker, Illinois. She was a graduate of Savanna High School, Class of 1934. On June 6, 1940, Evelyn married Richard Schaut in Savanna, he passed away April 9, 2002. Evelyn was a bit of a “tomboy” growing-up; she enjoyed playing kitten ball and was nicknamed “Jimmy” by some of her Wacker friends. She held a deep love for animals particularly dogs and horses. She often shared stories with her children about her life growing up in Wacker with her dogs, “Pal and Jerry” and her cat named, “Kitch”. Evelyn worked in her father’s creamery and drove a milk route.
Evelyn and her husband, Richard loved dancing to big band music and shared a passion for harness racing, which later turned into owning and training standard bred horses along with their youngest child, Rick. He currently trains and drives a stable of racehorses in Indiana. Their love of horses of other breeds was evident with the hours spent with their daughter, Nancy, showing horses and trail riding. A multi-talented and creative woman, Evelyn sewed and designed costumes for Nancy who went on to a career in show business, which she still pursues in South Florida. Middle daughter, Trish and her Mom, enjoyed having many spirited debates. Evelyn nurtured Trish’s confidence as she entered her career in publicity, Television Analyst for racing and journalism, always mentoring with her sage advise. It was with Trish and family that Evelyn lived with for the past several years. Evelyn wore many hats, and worked various jobs while raising her family. She and her husband operated a grocery store in Blackhawk Village near Savanna, a taxicab service in Mt. Carroll, and she owned and operated Evelyn’s Tot Shop on Market Street. She also worked as a Cook and Waitress for Grimm’s Dairy Bar in Mt. Carroll and Savanna, as well as a stint at the Mr. Chipper Drive-In. Evelyn was invited to join, Who’s Who in America, she was definitely an extra-ordinary woman, who is already greatly missed. A private service has been held at Rutherford Funeral Home in Powell, Ohio.
