Eugene "Jim" Dale Roe

Eugene “Jim” Dale Roe, age 80, of Miles, IA, passed away at Harmony Nursing Home, of Dubuque, IA, on October 14, 2025. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 18, at Law Jones Funeral Home, in Preston, IA. Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, in Sabula.

Jim was born October 29, 1945, in Dubuque, the son of Eugene and Fern (Marburger) Roe, Sr. He attended Miles schools graduating from Miles, IA with the class of 1963. Jim then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country, assigned to a munitions unit, during the Vietnam War. In 1969, after his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Jim worked for Clinton Corn for a few years, before opening a repair and welding shop. He loved working on antique machines and small electronics; a passion that extended into the later years of his life as well, where he was constantly on the hunt at local flea markets, for things he could tinker with. One of his favorite hobbies was building and flying radio controlled aircraft.

Jim also opened a bait and tackle shop out of his home, and even dabbled in gun and ammunition sales. He had a love for fishing and hunting, and enjoyed the opportunity to share in that love, with others. Jim was a practical joker who had a kind heart and a friendly spirit. One such example is how he befriended many of the local Amish folks. He’d happily offer them rides when needed, and one time, even sutured a cut on the head of one of the Amish men.

Jim is survived by a brother, Roger (Martha) Roe, of Bellevue, IA; sisters, Debra Graves, of Green Island, IA and Shelby (Sidney) Peters, of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene, Sr. and Fern; wife, Shellane; and brother-in-law, Alvin Graves.
