Erwin Herman Jepsen, 94, formerly of Preston, Iowa, died peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Mill Valley Nursing Home, Bellevue.
Erwin was born November 8, 1915, near Sabula, Iowa to Herman and Elise (Peters) Jepsen. He attended elementary school in Clinton for a short time and Walker Country School, rural Sabula. He graduated from Sabula High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1934. On June 3, 1939, Erwin married Jane M. Giddings. They observed their 65th wedding anniversary in 2004, Jane died February 15, 2005.
Erwin farmed with his dad until his marriage and then, with his wife Jane, farmed north of Miles, Iowa. He retired from farming and they built a new home in Preston in 1969, where he lived until moving to Mill Valley in November 2009.
Erwin was a member and past Council President and brotherhood member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Preston; a past member of the Miles School Board, Sabula Izaak Waltons, Farm Bureau Director, and Preston Creamery Director. In later years he enjoyed his membership with the Clinton Moose, Preston Senior Citizens and Tag-a-long Trailer Club.
Erwin and Jane wintered in south Texas for twenty years. He loved traveling, having visited all the states except Hawaii, playing cards and dancing.
Erwin is survived by: a daughter, Elyse (Paul) Carstensen, Preston, IA; two sons, Daniel (Phyllis) Jepsen, of Miles, IA; Thomas (Jill) Jepsen, of Oskaloosa, IA; seven grandchildren: Brian (Dawn) Carstensen, Charlotte, IA, Karen (Wax) Flowers, Decatur, GA, Sandra (Michael) Harrison, Houston, TX; Allys Carstensen, Preston, Gary (Cindy) Jepsen, Miles, IA, Michael (Lisa) Jepsen, Preston, and Tricia (Doug) Chervek, DesMoines, IA; sixteen great-grandchildren, Rob, Zach, Alisha and Elizabeth Carstensen, David and Karah Flowers and Nicholas and Jacob Harrison, Jeffery, Hilliary and Shannon Jepsen, Emma, Nicholas and Benjamin Chervek, Missy and Stephen (Doneca) Norem, and one great-great grandchild, Stephen Norem; a sister, Alice (Harold) Au, of Port Charlotte, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane; parents; a granddaughter, Nicole Jepsen, and two brothers Ernest and John Jepsen. Memorials may be given to: St. John’s Lutheran Church, Great River Threshers or the Sabula Izaak Waltons. Pallbearers for Erwin will be Brian Carstensen, Gary Jepsen, Ronald Jepsen, Michael Jepsen, Larry Jepsen, Ed Jepsen.
