Ernest James “Jim” Carroll Sr., age 77 of Erie, Illinois, formerly of Thomson, Illinois, died Thursday, April 5, 2018, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., with a visitation from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Erie Christian Church in Erie. Burial will take place in Lower York Cemetery in Thomson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Erie Christian Church (715 6th Avenue, Box 160, Erie, IL 61250).
Ernest was born December 27, 1940, the son of George and Vera (Carson) Carroll in Moline, Illinois. He attended York Community High School, graduating with the Class of 1960. Ernest proudly served his country as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class in the United States Navy from 1959-63. He married Lillian Dannels on September 27, 1970.
Ernest worked as an electrician for Commonwealth Edison in Cordova, Illinois, for 18 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Erie Christian Church. Ernest enjoyed farming, gardening, collecting tractors, going on mission trips with his church, and spending time with his family— especially his grandchildren.
Ernest will be dearly missed by his wife of 47 years, Lillian; five children, Wanda (Larry) Wynn of Jacksonville Florida, Theresa (Robbie) Dodd of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Ernest (Leslie Wright) Carroll, Jr. of Hardy, Virginia, Susan (Thomas) Striley of Erie, Illinois, and Ambrose Craver of Amarillo, Texas; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Darlene Hamm, of Rock Island, Illinois.
Ernest is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lila, Marjorie, Elizabeth Ann, Barbara, Jeanette, and Vicky.
