Ernest H. “John” Cox, age 66, of Preston, Iowa, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at the Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2005 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston. Pastor Iola McCutcheon will officiate. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery, Preston. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. Ernie was born October 12, 1938, the son of Ernest C. and Marvel E. (Page) Cox, in Christmas, Michigan. He graduated with his G.E.D. from the Clinton Community College, Clinton. Ernie spent his early life growing up in Christmas, Michigan. He married Norma D. Reed on May 15, 1962 in Michigan. He worked at John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa and later worked for a number of years at J.R.B. Welding in DeWitt, Iowa, from which he retired. Ernie worked as a police officer in the Jackson County area. Ernie loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed working in his flower garden, traveling to flea markets collecting eagles, and going fishing.
Ernie will be deeply missed by his wife, Norma Cox of Preston; two sons, Cris (Michelle) Cox of Phenix City Alabama and Dwight John Cox of Preston; three daughters, Patricia (Rick) White of Preston, Pansy (Bill) Oldag of Preston, and Betty Stenerson of Clinton; a brother, Willard (Lorraine) Cox of Michigan; one brother in-law, Arwin Jacobs of Michigan; three sisters Charlotte (Pete) Shelafoe, Celia “Skip” Berry, and Patty Moore all of Michigan; eight grandsons and one granddaughter; Michael and Mathew Cox of Lancaster, Ohio; Brent, Brandon and Brady Oldag, Sean Lange and John Cox all of Preston, Iowa. Brandi and Edmund Stenerson of Clinton, Iowa. Nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest C. and Marvel E. (Page) Cox, twin brothers who died in infancy, and one sister, Betty Jacobs.
