Engwerd M. “Ed” Mommsen, age 82 of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died on Monday, June 7, 2010 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Salvation Army in Ed’s memory.
Ed was born on April 8, 1928, the son of Manerd and Ida (Schaefer) Mommsen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended North Central College in Naperville and earned his Bachelors Degree in 1949. Ed later earned his Masters Degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois. He married Elaine Rohloff on June 24, 1950 in Toledo, Ohio.
Ed was an Educator with the Palatine Schaumburg High School District 211 for thirty-six years, retiring in 1985. After retiring, Ed and Elaine moved to Mount Carroll and built their home in 1994. Ed enjoyed reading, listening to music, collecting trains and loved model railroading. He also enjoyed taking care of projects at home and spending time with his family and friends.
Ed will be dearly missed by his wife of fifty-nine years, Elaine; one sister in-law, Ruth Rohloff of Dallas, Texas; four nephews, Vincent L. (Patte) Rohloff, Jr., William A. (Cathy) Rohloff, Gaylord W. (Lorraine) Rohloff and Robert G. “Bobby” Rohloff; one niece, Ruth Marie Rohloff; several great nieces and nephews; and one great-great niece and one great-great nephew.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother in-law, Vincent Rohloff.
