Eleanor M. Lydon, age 95, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, November 5, 2007 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 9, 2007 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 8, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, with a Rosary Service at 8:00 p.m.. Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 10, in St. John Catholic Cemetery, Adair, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the National Alzheimers Association at 225 N. Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
Eleanor was born April 25, 1912 near Casey, Iowa, the daughter of Michael J. and Eleanor “Nel” (Hogan) Griffin. She attended country school near Adair and Adair grade school. She graduated valedictorian, class of 1929 at Adair High School. She attended Ottumwa Heights College, Ottumwa, Iowa and then the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On November 28, 1936, Eleanor married James R. Lydon in Adair, Iowa. James died August 25, 1968 in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1967, Eleanor graduated from Drake University, with a degree in elementary education. Eleanor taught at country schools and later she taught 6th grade in the Adair, Casey school system. She also worked for the state of Iowa until retirement.
Eleanor very much loved and enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna and a former member of St. John Catholic Church, Adair, Iowa and the Altar and Rosary Societies of both parishes.
Eleanor will be dearly missed by a son, Michael M. (Molly) Lydon of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter, Patricia J. (Lewis) Lehnhardt of Savanna; a sister, Lillian (G.C. Grover) Nordman of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, James; three brothers, Bernard, James and Harold Griffin, and a sister, Mildred Lydon.
