Born into time: February 20, 1928

Born into eternity: January 22, 2026

Elaine M. Mommsen, age 97, a beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt and cherished community member, passed away peacefully at Manor Court of Liberty Village in Freeport, Illinois.

Elaine was born in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Arthur and Esther (Stick) Rohloff. Exposed to her father’s experience with agriculture and gardening, Elaine, likewise, developed a lifelong love of nature and gardening.

Elaine pursued her passion for faith and education at North Central College in Naperville, IL. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian and Elementary education.

While at North Central College, Elaine met the love of her life, Engwerd (Ed) Mommsen. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio and began their life together in Arlington Heights, IL. Their Christian faith was always central in the lives of Elaine and Ed. As charter members of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, Elaine was called upon to direct the rapidly expanding Christian Education program. It was a calling she pursued with creativity and heart. It was during this time Elaine was heavily involved in the planning and furnishing of the education building. Elaine described this "as every Christian educator's dream."

Elaine and Ed built a new home in Hawthorn Woods, IL which led them to reluctantly leave Arlington Heights and Southminster. After spending a few years in Hawthorn Woods, they built their dream home on 11.5 acres in Mount Carroll, IL. They then became pillars of the First United Methodist Church. Known for hospitality and entertaining, Elaine was an expert communicator, who loved talking and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Her home was often a hub of activity, especially for women’s groups.

A woman of many interests, Elaine was a "small market farmer" at heart who loved to garden. She thoroughly enjoyed being a homemaker. Elaine had a gift for cooking, baking, sewing, crafts and creativity. In addition, she possessed a gift for affection and passion that easily flowed into the love for her family of cats. She was also a dedicated advocate for her fellow residents at Manor Court, as well as others in need and not afraid to speak up on their behalf. A highlight of her interests was when she and Ed enjoyed traveling, particularly to Door County, Wisconsin. And, whether in Texas or Illinois, Rohloff family visits with Aunt Elaine and Uncle Ed were always fun and memorable.

Above all, Elaine, a woman of joy, will be remembered for her strong faith, her philanthropic spirit, her sharp mental faculties that she maintained late into life, and her deep love for her family and friends.

Elaine is survived by her niece and nephews: Ruth Marie Rohloff of Dallas, TX; William (Cathy) Rohloff, Sr. of Coppell, TX; Gaylord (Lorraine) Rohloff of Santa Rosa Valley, CA; and Robert (Brienne, deceased) Rohloff of North East, PA. She also leaves behind many great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, whom she loved. In addition, Elaine is survived by her college roommate and long-time friend, Erma Zager and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Engwerd (Ed); her parents; her brothers, Vincent Rohloff, Sr. and Gaylord Rohloff; and her nephew, Vincent Rohloff, Jr.

A service and celebration of Elaine’s life will be held at a later date in the spring. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff and caregivers of Manor Court at Liberty Village for their compassionate care during these last few years. Memorials may be made to Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St., Mount Carroll, IL61053 or a charity of your choosing.
