Dr. Edward J. H. Karvelius, age 86, a long time resident of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, entered into glory Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at the Graceland Manor Assisted Living Center, Monroe, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mt. Carroll. Christian Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Friday, July 15 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mt. Carroll or the Monroe, Wisconsin Hospice Association.
Edward was born July 13, 1918 in Koenigsberg, Germany the son of John and Alice (Painer) Karvelius. He was educated at the Berlin Institute of Technology. Edward married Roma Schipilo August 19, 1944 in Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1953. Edward studied and served on the faculty of the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Edward was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Mt. Carroll. He held various offices in the congregation, including the supervision of a major addition to Trinity Lutheran Church. Edward was a member of numerous professional engineering organizations, including the Society of American Military Engineers and the Quad Cities Engineering Science Council. He received his Doctorate in Engineering from Sussex Institute of Technology, New Jersey. He was a member of the Mt Carroll Lions Club and the Mt. Carroll Rotary Club. Edward was a Master Watchmaker and enjoyed fixing watches and clocks.
He worked at Mosler Safe Co., Chicago; Berg Electro Mfg., Chicago; Vari Product Co.; and the US Government Savanna Army Depot and Rock Island Arsenal.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice (Jeff) Gifford of Lena, Illinois; two sons, Victor (Darlene) Karvelius of Belvidere, Illinois and Edwin (Darlene) Karvelius of Morrison, Illinois; six grandchildren, Brian (Shannon) Gifford, Tiffany and Christina Gifford, Julianna and Steven Karvelius and Paul (Anna) Karvelius; and many wonderful friends. Edward is preceded in death by his wife, Roma, on July 10, 1990, and both parents.
