Edmund Louis Schmidt, 91, of Preston died Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue, Iowa following a brief illness.

Visitation will be Friday, July 4, 2008 from 2-7 P.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Preston, with Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus @ 6:45 P.M.)

A Mass celebrating Eddie’s life, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Preston, will be held at 10am Saturday, July 5, 2008, with a meal to follow the burial. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Preston.

Edmund was born July 23, 1916 in rural Spragueville, Iowa to John and Katherine Schmidt. He married Marie Kilburg on October 14, 1940 in Preston, Iowa.

Eddie farmed with his wife and children until 1963 when the family moved to Preston. He was also employed by Clinton Engines, Zeimet’s Garage, Preston Telphone Co., Preston Community Schools and retired with East Central Community Schools. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus and served on the board of directors of the Preston Telephone Co. Eddie loved God, his family, and being outdoors.

Survivors include, his wife, Marie, and four children, Gary (Mary) Schmidt, Diane (Delbert) Miller, and Leon (Sue) Schmidt all of Preston, and Beverly (Charles) Beauchamp of Maquoketa, 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, eight brothers, Ronald (Valeta), Gerald (MaryAnn), Leonard (Shirley), Vincent (Anita), Vitus, Levi (Vera), David (Audrey), and Thomas (Chen Lee) Schmidt, five sisters, Dorothy Zeimet, Katherine Groves, Maryetta (Larry) Lampe, Patricia (Verlin) Trenkamp, and Charlene Grothues, two brothers-in-law Arnold (Joanne) Kilburg, Robert (Carol) Kilburg, and four sisters-in-law Naomi Schmidt, Mildred Driscoll, Agnes McCarthy, and Rosemary (Ronald) Till.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents John and Katherine, and Mary, a son Leroy, his brothers Herbert, Harold, Julian, and John Schmidt, sisters Margaret (Harry) Rubel and Marcella Schmidt. Brothers-in-law Alvin Zeimet, Don Groves, John McCarthy, Herbert (Sally) Kilburg, Sylvester Driscoll, Ray (Rita) Kilburg, and sisters-in-law Katherine (Victor) Bormann and Darlis Schmidt, a grandson and two great-granddaughters.
