Edmund J. Berlage, age 87, of Galena, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home in Galena. A Funeral Mass will be held, Monday, May 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Elizabeth, Illinois. Father Noel Jacob and Father Chris Kuhn will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth, Illinois. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 4, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Elizabeth, Illinois, and also from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Monday morning at the funeral home. There will be a Knights of Columbus prayer service and rosary held at 7:00 p.m on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, for Masses, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Edmund was born on June 24, 1920, on his family’s Century farm in Guilford Township, the son of Leo and Ruth (Schreck) Berlage. He attended Elizabeth High School and then began his lifelong career in farming. On September 25, 1941, Edmund married Virginia Winter in St. Mary Church in Elizabeth, Illinois.

Edmund was a third-degree member of the St. Mary Church of Elizabeth Knights of Columbus Council #10212, and a member of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus, Monsignor. C.F. Conley Assembly. Edmund served for three terms as a Guilford Township Trustee and on the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau for eight Years. Edmund was also on the Guilford and Thompson Insurance Board for sixteen years and the Jo Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation Board. He was named Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1981.

Edmund is survived by his wife Virginia of 66 years; his daughter Ruth Fina of Milwaukee; his daughter in-law Catherine Berlage; two grandchildren, Stephen (Diane) Berlage and Elizabeth (Michael) Brophy; five great grandchildren, Treven Bruce, Elijah Berlage, Micah Berlage, Lilly Brophy, and Emma Brophy; two brothers in-law, Clarence (Rita) Winter and Carl Winter; and four sisters in-law, Helen Bell, Lucille Brown, Mona Bodell, and Sarah Werner.

Edmund is preceded in death by his parents; his son Keith Berlage; step-mother Loretta Berlage; two brothers in-law, Michael Winter and Fred Winter; and two sisters in-law, Violet Hesselbacher and Clara Westphal.
