Earl J. Martin, age 93, call sign “W9KKJ”, went Silent Key on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, with pastor Donna Hoffman Officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held at 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll with a Masonic Service held at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Earl’s memory.
Earl was born on November 2, 1920, in Osage Township, Illinois, the son of Charles J. and Genevieve (Riordan) Martin. He attended Lostant High School and graduated with the Class of 1939. Earl honorably served in the United States Army Air Corps for five years during WWII. Earl married the love of his life Jenice L. Randecker on April 20, 1946. She passed away on July 4, 1987. He worked for the Savanna Army Depot for thirty three years until his retirement in 1983. During his retirement he enjoyed being a crossing guard for the Mt. Carroll School District at the corner of Clay Street and Benton Street for many years.
Earl was a member of the American Legion Post #67, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Palisades Amateur Radio Club, fifty year member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), United Methodist Church in Mt. Carroll, Cyrus Lodge #188, Valley of Freeport, Tabala Temple of Rockford, N.A.R.F.E. Earl loved traveling to Cub’s games and taking bus trips to different places in the United States. Earl spent many of his years tracing the family genealogy, long before the internet came along.
Earl will be dearly missed by his son, Mike Martin of Mt. Carroll; granddaughter, Kimberly (Greg) Rada of Florence, Illinois; grandson, Christopher (Kelli) Martin of Mt. Carroll; sister in-law, Lucille Martin of Decatur, Illinois; several nieces and nephews. Earl is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jenice; brother, Marvin Charles Martin and a daughter in-law, Diane Martin.
