Douglas G. Larson, age 82, of Hanover, IL, passed away Thursday, May 23, at Midwest Medical Center in Galena, IL. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Law Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Douglas was born on June 26, 1941, son of Harley and Thelma (Blom) Larson. He grew up in Conrad, Montana, but after his father’s passing his family moved to Lignite, North Dakota. It was on a farm in North Dakota that Doug met the love of his life, Marjorie Waugh. They were married on December 1, 1962, and together, they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Doug and Marjorie raised ten children, embodying a strong family bond that saw them through various relocations from North Dakota to Missouri, Colorado, and finally Hanover, where they settled in 1983.
In Hanover, Doug's deep spirituality and love for Jesus led him to start a church, initially from his living room, then the basement of their home, and eventually opening the United Pentecostal Church in 1996. For 36 years, Doug dedicated himself to preaching, Bible study, and fostering a loving community.
Doug was known for his mechanical ingenuity, often fixing anything with duct tape, and his impressive collection of toys and old toy cars. He had a remarkable ability to turn everyday moments into fun and cherished memories for his children and grandchildren. As the proud president of the "Grandpa Club," Doug's love for his grandchildren was boundless, and he delighted in showing them how to enjoy life to the fullest.
Douglas will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Marjorie of Hanover; six children, Kathy (Roy) Upchurch of Effingham, IL, Mary (Richie) Brewer of St. Louis, MO, Teresa Rogers of Chillicothe, MO, Tanna (Albert) Rowell of Hanover, Shane (Anita) Larson of Hanover, and Tim (Ellen) Larson of Hanover; 22 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren; one sister, Baretta Enget of Park River, ND; three daughter-in-laws, Debbie Gabrielson of Chillicothe, Debbie Gabrielson of Braymer, MO, and Debbie Larson of St. Louis; and many nieces and nephews.
Douglas is preceded in death by his four sons, Steve Gabrielson, Bob Gabrielson, Keven Larson, and Daniel Larson; parents, Harley and Thelma; and his siblings, Darvin, Elton, Paul, Jerry, Doris, Larry, and Leonard; and his great-grandchild, Westin.
