Dorothy Vanover devoted her life to her family. This came through raising five children and caring long-term for her disabled daughter. At the age of 73, Dorothy passed away Friday, December 4, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Inurnment will take place at Savanna Township Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the funeral home, prior to the service.
Dorothy was born July 3, 1942 near Argo Fay, Illinois. She was raised on the family farm and is a graduate of the York High School, Thomson, Illinois with the Class of 1961. Dorothy married Curtis Vanover in June, 1986. They celebrated sixteen years together. Curtis died in 2002.
Dorothy worked for the Savanna Ordinance Depot for many years, taking several years off in the middle to raise children. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, board games with family, and cooking for everybody. Family was the center of her life.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by five children, Marcy Mohns of Savanna, Brian (Valarie) Shafer of Avondale, Arizona, Ray (Dolores) Shafer of Millbrook, Alabama, Troy Shafer of Savanna, and Tammy (Joshua) Spittler of Savanna; three grandchildren, Danielle Shafer and Megan and Emily Shafer; and two brothers, John (Kay) Letcher of Thomson and Jim Letcher of Fulton, Illinois. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; both parents; a sister-in-law, Cathy Letcher; and two brothers, David and “Dutch.”
