Dorothy Stadel loved to visit with everyone as she served the Elizabeth community for almost fifty years as their “Avon Lady.” She was a real people-person and loved being a Grandma. At the age of 83, Dorothy went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, as her family prayed by her side at the Elizabeth Nursing Home.
Dorothy was born September 19, 1930, the daughter of Carl and Vivian (Fox) Wickler near Warren, Illinois. She graduated from Warren High School with the Class of 1948. Dorothy married Irvin Stadel on September 4, 1950, in Elizabeth. They celebrated sixty-three years of marriage.
After graduating from high school, Dorothy worked for the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau until 1952. She was an Avon representative from 1953 to 2001. Throughout her life, Dorothy maintained active involvement in her community. In addition to being a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Jo Daviess County Homemaker’s Extension, she was also a member of St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society. She maintained a presence with the local youth by helping with the Jo Daviess County 4-H and volunteering as a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her husband, Irvin; one son; Jeffrey (Connie) Stadel of Lena, Illinois; daughter Marcia Havens of Elizabeth; five grandchildren, Emily Stadel, Erica (Josh) Kraft, Adam (Sarah) Stadel, Kelli (Dean) Vielhuber and Cole (Katie) Havens; three great grandchildren, Anicka and Kasen Kraft and Piper Havens; one brother, Allen (Joyce) Wickler of Stockton, Illinois; and a sister in-law, Gloria Stadel of Rockford. Dorothy is preceded in death by both parents, a brother in infancy and a brother in-law, Austin Stadel.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elizabeth. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth.
