Dorothy May Rogers, age 94, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away Monday, October 14, 2019 at the Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mt. Carroll with Parson Bob Stark Officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Law Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, and also one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Carroll.
Dorothy was born at home on October 22, 1924 in Dunlap, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Lillian (Mummert) Smith. She graduated from the Mt. Carroll High School, Class of 1942. On June 27, 1942, Dorothy married Harold Rogers. They raised two daughters and celebrated 69 years of marriage.
During WWII, Dorothy worked at the Savanna Depot. With her love for flowers, she also worked at Marth’s Variety and Flower Shop and the Old Glenview Hotel Flower Shop, both in downtown Mt. Carroll. Dorothy was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Deborah Circle, as well as a member of NARFE #604. She spent her free time babysitting for her neighbors and sewing. She loved collecting jewelry from the different places that she and Harold would travel. Every summer, for 30 years, they would visit their cabin on Lake Big Too Much in Minnesota.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Linda (Roy) Rathje of Sabula, Iowa and Judy (Dan) Oberg of Dixon, Illinois; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; her brother Floyd (Charleen) Smith of Clinton, Iowa; and her sister Darlene Kaufman of Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Lillian, her husband, Harold, and brother Clyde.
