Dorothy Elisabeth Norton, age 84, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, November 6, 2006 at the Wyndcrest Nursing Home in Clinton, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2006 , at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Reverend Michael Wey of the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna will officiate. Burial will take place in Wyoming Township Cemetery, Wyoming, Iowa. Friends may call from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2006, one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna.
Dorothy was born November 15, 1921 on the family farm near Maquoketa, Iowa, the daughter of William and Rosa (Mortensen) Zirkelbach. She attended country school in rural Maquoketa. Dorothy attended Maquoketa High School, where she played basketball and baseball, graduating in the Class of 1938. She went on to attend Junior College and began teaching in New Castle, Iowa country schools for two years. On June 1, 1942, Dorothy married Harvey Norton in the First Reformed Church in Maquoketa.
Dorothy worked ten years as an Assistant Librarian for the Savanna Library and did some substitute teaching in the area. She held membership in the First Presbyterian Church in Savanna; the Presbyterian Women’s Club; the Wednesday Study Club; the Palisades Art League; the UNI Club; and the Palisades Ladies Golf League. She was also a Troop Leader for the American Girl Scouts; a sponsor for the Senior High Youth Group and the Antiques Club.
Dorothy very much loved and enjoyed her family. Traveling all over the United States and Europe was a favorite activity for Dorothy and Harvey. She enjoyed traveling, painting, reading, boating, dancing, playing bridge, golfing, and sharing roses from her Garden Club.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Harvey of Savanna; a daughter, Candace Davis of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, John Zirkelbach of Clinton, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Brett) Nelson and Tyrrell (Meghan) Davis; one great-granddaughter, Alexandrea McConkey and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Angie King and Marjorie Haught.
