Dorothy McCue

February 26, 1927 — April 8, 2026

Dorothy Marie (Knauer) McCue, 99, of Lanark, Illinois, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life deeply rooted in family, faith, and community. She was born on February 26, 1927, in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, to George Christ Knauer and Marie Magdalene (Wurster) Knauer.

She was baptized in 1927, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mt. Carroll and confirmed in 1945, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Mt. Carroll, where her faith would remain an important part of her life.

Dorothy met the love of her life, Patrick (Pat) Anthony McCue, in Savanna, Illinois. They were married on May 14, 1949, in Lanark and went on to share 58½ years of marriage before his passing on November 27, 2007.

A devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark since 1957, Dorothy gave generously of her time and talents. She served on the Altar Guild, Church Council, Stewardship and Finance Committees, and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA), and she lovingly taught Sunday School for 18 years.

Dorothy graduated from Lanark High School with the Class of 1945 and continued her education through computer coursework at Highland Community College and IBM in Rockford, Illinois. She built a long and dedicated career at Mt. Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance Company, where she worked for 44 years before retiring in 1999, as Assistant Secretary in accounting.

Dorothy and Pat built a life that blended hard work with joy. They farmed together and were longtime members of the Carroll County Country Couples Club (4C’s), now the Prime Timers of the Farm Bureau. They especially loved dancing and traveling, often attending Farm Bureau conventions and exploring new places with close friends.

In her later years, Dorothy found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, including watching her favorite game shows, playing cards and dominoes with friends, and, above all, continuing to dance whenever she had the chance.

Dorothy’s greatest delight was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Kaye (Ronald) Atherton of Thomson, Illinois; her son-in-law, James Komiskey of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; her granddaughter, Kathleen Marie Komiskey Griswold (Steffin Griswold) of Robbinsdale, Minnesota; her grandsons, Martin James (Julie) Komiskey of Oregon, Illinois, and Ryan Atherton (Katie Burgess) of Lanark, Illinois; and Katie’s sons, Jonah and Benson. She is also survived by many cousins and cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Patrick (Pat) McCue; her daughter, Diane Marie (James) Komiskey; her special friend, Virgil (Red) Tyler; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
