Dorothy A. Hoyer-Dennison age 82, of Savanna, Illinois passed away Saturday, August 1, 2015 surrounded by her family at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, a second visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 2015 at the Community United Church of Christ, Savanna, with Pastor Niel Shoffner officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Sabula, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy’s memory.
Dorothy was born October 2, 1932, Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel F. Adney and Hazel Mae Brainard Knuppe. Dorothy worked as a farmer for many years. But her most cherished job was being a homemaker taking care of her family, they always appreciated her making them their favorite desserts when they stopped in to see her.
On December 4, 1948, Dorothy married Stanley J. Hoyer in Sabula. Stanley passed away Feb. 18, 2004. On March 22, 2006, Dorothy married Lew Dennison in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Dorothy completed her GED in 2004, at the age of 74.
Dorothy was very active in the church, she was a Worship Board Member, Willing Workers Coordinator, on the Fellowship Team, sent notes to visitors, volunteered at the food pantry and thrift shop. She was most notable for reading scripture over the radio. She enjoyed baking, sewing, crocheting, gardening, canning. Most of all, Dorothy treasured spending time with her family and friends.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by her husband, Lew of Savanna; children, Jim (Shirley) Hoyer of Stockton, Illinois, Susan (Timothy Bradbury) Diehl of Freeport, Illinois, Dennis (Sandy) Hoyer of Dubuque, Iowa, Anna (Howard) McDanel of Savanna, Dave (Kelly) Hoyer of Littleton, Colorado; step-daughter, Julie (Norris) Hartman of Fulton, Illinois; sixteen grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; one brother and four sisters. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley; two brothers; one sister and three grandchildren.
