Dorothy Jean Hatteberg, age 92, of Miles, Iowa, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, Iowa, with burial to follow in the Miles Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2015, at Calvary Lutheran.
Dorothy, the daughter of Lester and Gladys (Jackson) Papke, was born on December 26, 1922, in rural Sabula, Iowa and graduated from Miles High School in 1940. She earned a teaching degree from the University of Dubuque and went on to teach school in Preston, Miles, and Sabula. On March 28, 1948, she married Tilbert “Tib” Hatteberg at Calvary Lutheran. Dorothy and Tib raised three sons and celebrated forty-nine years of marriage before Tib passed away on November 26, 1997.
When she wasn’t busy raising her three boys, Dorothy was an active member of Calvary Lutheran, participating in the church council, women’s groups, and the choir. She also was involved in various social clubs and civic organizations, including the Miles Literary Club, Bridge clubs, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Despite her busy schedule, she was a master seamstress and cook. Her legendary recipes were staples at church functions and other social gatherings throughout the area. And somehow, she still found time to practice the piano, play cards with family and friends, and work the daily cryptoquote and crossword puzzle.
Dorothy will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but most especially by her three sons, Craig (Lois) Hatteberg of Savanna, Illinois, Kent (Hope) Hatteberg of Louisville, Kentucky, and Scott (Bobette) Hatteberg of Solon, Ohio; ten grandchildren, Emily (Srdjan), Brandon (Taylor), Ashley, Brittany, Carene (Jacob), Sarah (Raymon), Lindsay, Heidi, Alyssa, and Adam; and great grandson, Abraham.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Paul; and sister, Margo.
