Dorothy Mae Green, age 88, of Thomson, Illinois, died Monday, March 29, 2010, at Mercy Living Center South, Clinton, Iowa. Private burial of cremated remains will be in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson.
Dorothy was born November 22, 1921, in Savanna, Illinois, the daughter of Augustus H. “Gussy” and Edna Fern (Brock) Roggendorf. She attended Chestnut Park Grade School, Savanna and York Community High School, Thomson, graduating with the Class of 1939.
On May 30, 1959, Dorothy married Russel Wayne "Shorty" Green, Sr. in Milledgeville, Illinois. Russel passed away December 12, 1978.
Dorothy began working after high school at the A&P Grocery Store in Savanna. She worked for her father at Gus’s Fishing and Bait Shop in Thomson, which later became Green’s Sporting Goods Store in Thomson. She then worked for eighteen years as a bookkeeper for the former Thomson Review Newspaper. After her father's death in 1964, she and her husband took over operations of the Sporting Goods Store and Pump & Well Services, which she continued to operate after her husbands death. She retired in July of 1985.
Dorothy enjoyed the outdoors, especially her pet squirrels and stray cats, but most of all she loved her dog, Tippy. She is a member of York Community Church, and a former member of the church's TNT Club. She was a former member of the Thomson Chamber of Commerce and former member of the Women of Moose Lodge of Savanna, IL.
Dorothy is survived by her two step-sons, Robert (Alice) Green of Marion, Iowa, and Russel (Mary Ann) Green, Jr. of Rock Falls, Illinois; thirteen step-grandchildren; twenty four step-great grandchildren; and six step-great great grandchildren.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one step - son, Charles Duane Green.
